Dermabrasion Prices
Dermabrasion is a procedure that uses controlled abrasion to wear away the upper layers of the skin either through sandpaper or mechanical means. This is done by surgically scraping the top layer of the skin that softens any irregularities on the skin. Current practices commonly use carbon dioxide or YAG laser. Its main purpose is to smoothen the skin and to remove acne scars and wrinkles. It is also often used to mend the appearance of skin that has been scarred by accidents or prior surgeries. In some cases, it can also be used to eliminate pre-cancerous growth of keratosis.
What the procedure won’t do is to completely remove all flaws, scars and prevent telltale signs of old age from coming. Any individual can undergo this treatment, may they be male or female, young or old although it poses a slower healing time to older people. Schedule a consultation so important factors like medical history; coloring and skin type can be assessed. This is extremely important since those with Asian skin or with darker colored complexion can have perpetually discolored or blotchy skin. Also, those who have sensitive skin and are susceptible to skin reactions may experience a flare-up following the procedure. If you have persistent acne or had skin burns, radiation treatments or prior chemical peeling then this is also not advisable since there is a higher risk of developing infection.
One of its main disadvantages is that it exfoliates skin only 15 to 25 micrometers into the skin that’s why it’s not recommended for removal of deep wrinkles. Also, its risks and complications include dryness, temporary bruising and extreme sensitivity to the sun.
This treatment requires application of a local anesthetic. It makes the skin look red and raw afterwards and also takes several months to grow back and heal. This procedure is normally qualified as safe when done by a board-certified and expert physician. A common risk associated with this treatment is pigmentation on the skin when the affected area is exposed under the sun on a prolonged period of time. In some instances, permanent darkening occurs and blotchy spots remain even after the recovery time. Whiteheads are also a common development after the treatment although they usually disappear even without being treated. If the skin swells after the surgery then enlarged pores may also occur though this also fades when swelling subsides. A rare case is skin infection and scarring though this isn’t usually the case on skin-refinishing treatments like this. Some people also develop scar tissues similar to keloid but can also be treated with steroid injections. As always, choose a qualified surgeon to perform this procedure to significantly minimize the risks associated with this treatment.
Dermabrasion can cost as much as $100 for a localized spot treatment and as much as $4,000 for the whole complete procedure. This already includes the surgeon’s fee and the anesthesia used on your treatment. Prices may also vary depending on your location so ask a local surgeon for specific pricing options.
